Meta Manager

Meta Manager is a cost effective solution for metadata management for both structured and unstructured data. It supports exposing metadata contained within relational database management systems by mapping metadata attributes to a metadata standard. For unstructured data, Meta Manager will crawl directory systems, detect files (all files supported), and automatically extract the metadata for search and discovery. The tool also provides the ability to manually enter metadata.

Enabling Interoperability with Version 5.0.

Meta Manager Version 5.0 provides data providers with the ability to quickly and easily expose their data holdings and data assets via Web-based interfaces. The Web service has been implemented using the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standard, Catalog Service for the Web (CSW). It is a metadata management solution that provides a complete solution for creating and defining new and/or mapping existing geospatial metadata definitions and geospatial datasets according to national and international standards. These standards include ISO 19115, North American Profile (NAP), Department of Defense Metadata Standard (DDMS) and Dublin Core. If a new or modified existing standard is required, these can be easily added.

Meta Manager - Features

Meta Manager provides additional features and benefits that go well beyond the competition and include:

Data Asset Support. For Structured Data.

Structured Data – Metadata records that reside in a relational database (Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access). For example, a satellite inventory database, a collection of shape files or a database table containing a listing of PDFs about an area of interest.

For structured metadata, the Meta Manager Administrator is used to map the relational tables into a metadata standard (e.g. Dublin Core, ISO 19115, NAP).

Data Asset Support for structured data

Data Access Support for Unstructured Data.

Unstructured Data – Data files located on an organization’s file systems.

For unstructured data, Meta Manager provides a common framework for processing this information to extract meaning and create structured data about the information. It will crawl directory structures and harvest metadata about files discovered into the database configured to work with Meta Manager.

There are very few restrictions on file types. File types include: KML, MrSID, GeoTIF, PDF, SHP; Microsoft documents: Word, PowerPoint, Excel; and Image types: PNG, GIF, BMP, TIF, JPG, JPE, JPEG, JFIF, ICO, PNM, PGM, PBM, PPM, PSD, and XMP; HTML files; etc.

Data access support for unstructured data

Expose Your Data. Automated Metadata Population.

Easily integrates with existing relational databases such as Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Access, without requiring modifications or changes to the originating data structures. Can expose the relational database content using one or more of the standard metadata specifications included within the application. This is accomplished by mapping the database columns to the metadata elements. Attributes in the database can be translated and augmented as necessary.

Has the ability to fill in gaps in the database for the metadata standard. For example, contact information may be entered once and then be retrieved along with each metadata record in the database. Enhanced SQL syntax checking and verification. Includes a metadata harvesting facility for performing automated metadata population from unstructured data (KML, MrSID, GeoTIF, PDF, SHP, Microsoft documents (Word/PowerPoint/Excel), PNG, GIF, BMP, TIF, JPG, JPE, JPEG, JFIF, etc.) distributed throughout the organization's file systems. Meta Manager will keyword-index all files that are harvested by the Meta Manager harvester.

OGC-Compliant and Certified. Built upon OGC-CSW 2.0.2

Meta Manager generates file transfer options so that files and assets can be downloaded by users once discovered in the system. Style sheets are included with the system to style metadata result sets according to the metadata standard. These can also be modified by administrators.

The Meta Manager server is built upon the OGC-CSW (CSW 2.0.2) specification. Consequently, other clearing houses can search your data holdings "out-of-the-box".

The Meta Manager server is a high-performance server that will respond to queries instantly.
Meta Manager is OGC-compliant and certified.

Open Data Integration. Publishing, sharing, finding and using data.

Government organizations throughout the world are involved in open data initiatives and use open data portals to allow seamless access to government data and information. CKAN is an open-source data portal platform used by many governments and organizations to make data accessible by providing the ability to streamline publishing, sharing, finding and using data. The CKAN portal platform is used by several government agencies  and is supported by Compusult's Meta Manager.

CKAN is used as the basis for Open Data initiatives by government organizations in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. Meta Manager can be directly harvested by CKAN software to streamline populating an organization’s data directly into a CKAN-based portal.

Sites using the CKAN software include:
   - data.gov.uk (UK)
   - data.gc.ca (Canada)
   - www.data.gov (US)

Meta Manager - Components

Meta Manager components consist of the following:

Meta Manager
Server

A Web service implemented using the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Catalogue Service for the Web (CSW) standard.

A high-performance search engine that will search relational databases for items of interest. Relational databases supported include: Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access.

The server will return XML search results in the standard format requested.

Meta Manager Server

Meta Manager
Harvester

Easily integrates with existing relational databases such as Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Access, without requiring modifications or changes to the originating data structures.

Can expose the relational database content using one or more of the standard metadata specifications included within the application. This is accomplished by mapping the database columns to the metadata elements. Attributes in the database can be translated and augmented as necessary.

Has the ability to fill in gaps in the database for the metadata standard. For example, contact information may be entered once and then be retrieved along with each metadata record in the database.

Includes a metadata harvesting facility for performing automated metadata population from unstructured data (KML, MrSID, GeoTIF, PDF, SHP, Microsoft documents (Word/PowerPoint/Excel), PNG, GIF, BMP, TIF, JPG, JPE, JPEG, JFIF, etc.) distributed throughout the organization's file systems.

Meta Manager will keyword-index all files that are harvested by the Meta Manager harvester.

Meta Manager Harvester

Meta Manager
Administrator

A desktop client that provides data administrators with the ability to manage a Meta Manager instance. For structured metadata, the administrator will allow the specification and connection to the target database containing the database tables to be exposed for search and discovery.

The tool provides the ability to map each of the data elements into the desired standard. The administrator also provides the ability to translate/combine attributes in tables to provide more meaningful output.

When creating a collection for unstructured data, Meta Manager Administrator simply requires the user to name the collection and then point the harvester at the location of the files within the directory structure. The Meta Manager Harvester will take it from there.

The Meta Manager Administrator also contains a file-based metadata browse and update facility for browsing metadata harvested from files located on the file system.

The Meta Manager reporting facility will generate reports detailing how metadata has been configured and mapped within the system.

Meta Manager Administrator

Meta Manager
Client

Each Meta Manager server installation is shipped with a Meta Manager Client.
The Meta Manager client is a JSP application and may be used to test Meta Manager collections. In addition, organizations may utilize and modify this client for use in the organization’s Web site or portal infrastructure.

The client provides users with the ability to specify the collection to be searched, the geospatial coordinates, and other metadata attributes such as date and time and keyword.

A CSW query construction window is included so that the user may review the XML format for a query that is delivered to the server.

The user may also review the XML that is returned from the server, based upon the query submitted.

Style sheets are included so that the XML metadata that is returned from the query is formatted and suitable for user interaction.
