For Immediate Release
New Climate Resilience Pilot Program being Developed
May 1, 2024

(Mount Pearl, Canada) - Compusult, a world-leading geospatial software firm with headquarters in Newfoundland and Labrador, is developing a Community Resilience, Preparedness and Response System. The system is being developed and piloted for Miawpukek First Nation (MFN), located at the mouth of the Conne River on the south coast of the island of Newfoundland.

The project is being funded through the Canadian Safety and Security Program (CSSP) – a program that supports federal, provincial, territorial, municipal and Indigenous governments in the development of innovative science and technology advancements that contribute to the safety and security of Canadians.

Much of Compusult’s recent activity has been to develop easy-to-use software solutions to support areas such as search and rescue, climate resilience, coastal monitoring, and emergency preparedness.

Mr. Barry O’Rourke, Compusult’s president, is leading the project. “Climate-related challenges like wildfires and floods are becoming more prevalent, but geospatial and mapping technology also continues to advance very rapidly. Governments and other organizations can rely on user-friendly technology from this Pilot Project to help make their communities more resilient: to adapt to climate change, and prepare for extreme weather events. This system is being built with our friends in Conne River, with the intention to roll it out to other regions around the country.”

Chief Brad Benoit is MFN’s Chief. “This is the second environmental project we have undertaken with Compusult. Our community has a strong history of adopting new technologies, and we feel that this pilot program will give us new insights into preparing for changes in our natural environment, and provide a model for other communities down the road.”

Compusult was founded in 1985. In addition to its offices in Canada, Compusult has a satellite office in The Hague, Netherlands and a wholly-owned subsidiary in Chantilly, Virginia. Compusult is a world leader in geospatial data management and related applications. The company also provides services in asset tracking, assistive technology, and robotics.
